MLM and the Lead Generation Factory – Starting Tips to Success in MLM

How many of you have watched the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?  For those of you that haven’t, or can’t remember what the film is about, here’s a quick summary.  It’s about a candy maker named Willy Wonka that has decided to open up his factory to 5 lucky children to take a tour, and 1 of them will actually inherit the factory.  To be one of the children to get this tour, they had to find a golden ticket which had been randomly hidden in the chocolate bars.  Long story short, 4 of the kids were simply rotten and spoiled, and then there was Charlie who was simply happy to be there.  I won’t ruin the ending for those of you that have not seen the film, but that’s really all you need to know to get into this article.

Anyway, the point to all this is there are a lot of Charlie’s in the world today; hoping against hope to get an opportunity to fulfill a dream (his was getting to see the Chocolate Factory).  The Chocolate Factory could easily be considered reaching the top position in your company, and the MLM company could be considered the golden ticket.  For those of you that have found the “golden ticket,” that’s great, but now comes the hard part.  How do you make sure you get the Chocolate Factory?

Most MLMs will tell you that you have to make a list of everyone you know; family, friends, coworkers, associates, etc.  Once you’ve made this list, that becomes your set of leads.  You should always add to this list whenever you meet someone new, or join a new social group, etc.  Does this sound familiar?  That is the general idea of lead generation for a lot of MLM companies out there.

So now that you’ve got your leads, you contact them and use the trigger words “favor”, “help”, and “need”.  For example, you say to a family member, “Can you do me a favor?  I just joined company A and I need you to try out the services.  Will you help me?”  Some companies will call this relationship marketing, but it sounds like simple begging to me.  That is not my idea of fun, and not what I or any of you joined your company for.  So how do we get around this and get the REAL “Chocolate Factory”.

There’s 3 things that will create the kind of lead generation you are looking for; you, the internet, and teaching.

1. Start with you.  Do you have a burning desire to succeed in your business, or are you simply desparate for that quick buck?  If you are just looking to make a quick buck, people will either join and not stay, or simply not join you.  So make sure that you have a desire to succeed, which will only happen if you help those that join you.  That means make yourself available to answer questions not in your company’s FAQs, and become an expert at some aspect of marketing.  This point leads me into the second item.

2.  Move away from face to face and go online.  There are a lot of ways to market online and with some research, those methods can be found.  Pick a method that you find interesting, and learn everything you can about it.  You can do this while you market to your potential prospects because if you find one good idea that someone else has not thought of, you have automatically made yourself an expert to them.  Even if you have only generated 1 lead, that may very well be 1 lead more than what they have achieved, and your prospects will want to know what you did to achieve that.  This leads to the last part.

3.  Teach.  Teach your leads something that you have learned.  This will build a  relationship of trust with them, and they will begin to see you as a leader.  I must caution you though, in teaching what you know, don’t do it with the expectation that they will give something to you. You have to genuinely want your leads (prospects) to know what you are teaching them.  This does not mean give them all of your knowledge for free, but enough that they feel it is useful, and want to learn more.  This is preselling them on you, so when you do approach with your product or your opportunity, they already know and trust you.
