MOVIE REVIEW – DISTRICT 9

, a faux documentary, violent sci-fi action extravaganza, social message film brought to you by producer Peter Jackson and first time director Neill Blomkamp is at times brilliant and at times ridiculously stupid.  The film is based on a short film from Blomkamp called Alive in Joberg.  The first half of the film is amazing but from that point on, the film degrades into the bastard stepchild of and .  It really is a shame because could’ve been one of the best sci-fi films ever.  I generally make it a point not to expose plot points in my reviews but I don’t think I can express what I loved and hated about the film without doing so.  That being said, there may be some spoilers ahead, so read on at your own risk.

The film starts as a documentary and quickly fills in the backstory that brings the film to the present.  In 1982, a large alien space craft flies over Johannesburg, South Africa, only to hover over the city motionless.  After 3 months of zero activity, the government cuts its way into the ship to discover aliens that can only be described as a cross between humans and shrimp with a little cockroach thrown in for good measure.  The aliens (known as Prawns) are found helpless and dying after their leaders all mysteriously died.  They are brought to Earth where they are segregated into a ghetto known as District 9.  The aliens are depicted as evil, animal like creatures and through interviews with different people on the documentary we discover that humans have become intolerant of the aliens and want them to just go away.  There are many sci-fi films that feature alien invasions and they always ask the same question; what are the aliens going to do to us?  flips that on it head and instead asks what would we do to them and this provides serious food for thought.  Based on all of the racial injustices throughout human history from Apartheid to Jews being placed in concentration camps during World War II, the film comes off as very truthful.  We as prejudiced based humans would probably treat alien visitors with hostility and social injustice.  It is here that the film shines and is worthy of praise and I wish the filmmaker would’ve explored these themes more.

In present day, the government has decided to move the Prawns from their current slum to a more controlled environment known as District 10, which is truly more of a concentration camp.  The government sends their agents known as MRU (Military Research Unit or Murderers R Us; not sure which) to facilitate the move.  Working with the government is a corporation that really wants to learn more about the aliens’ technologically advanced weaponry.  As they move into District 9 to evict the aliens, the humans are shown for the evil louts that they are as they bully and kill the Prawn mercilessly.  This is all filmed in documentary style and we also learn that the aliens have also been exploited by a crime lord who has been profiting from the aliens by trading cat food (the Prawns are addicted to it) and meat in return for their guns and money.  The film never answers how any of the aliens would have money, but whatever.  The problem that both the crime lord and the military have is that the Prawns weapons do not work for humans and can only be used when interacting with alien DNA.

The company sends in one of their geeky employees, Wikus Van De Merwe (a brilliant Sharlto Copley) to handle the eviction and get each alien to sign a form that gives their consent for the move.  This is one of the first things that struck me as demented.  Would a government hell bent on stealing weaponry from these aliens be concerned about eviction forms?  I understand that they did this to be politically correct but it is quite clear from the interviews with the citizens of Johannesburg that no one cares how the aliens are taken away, they just want them gone.  It is never really clear who, if anybody cares about the rights of these creatures.  As Wilkus goes from shack to shack searching for weapons, he discovers a device that seems dangerous and decides to confiscate it.  As he is examining the device, it spurts a black oil like liquid all over his face and soon after he starts to become sick; throwing up black liquid, teeth and fingernails falling off, etc.  It here that the film abandons the documentary format and where begins to come off the rails. 

It seems the liquid is turning Wilkus into one of the aliens and he is taken to a secret facility where he becomes a human (alien?) guinea pig.  At this point Wilkus’ arm has become alien and the company uses him to fire the Prawns weapons.  Seeing as he is the first human to survive as a hybrid, they plan to cut him up and research his organs so that they can duplicate the process.  Wilkus escapes and turns into on acid.  Wilkus take refuge in the only place he won’t be found, District 9 and meets a Prawn who is actually intelligent, known as Christopher.  Christopher is a brilliant scientist and a caring father and is the only Prawn featured in the movie that is shown to have any “humanity”.  This is also one of my biggest problems with .  I understand that the living conditions the aliens are forced into drives them to become like animals, but there aren’t any other Prawns who are intelligent and caring?  I find this tricky to believe and it makes it even more difficult to care about their fate.  It seems Christopher is the one that collected the black oil that is transforming Wilkus and it is the only thing that will power the spaceship so that the aliens can at long last return home.  This is another flaw in the film.  The oil can power a starship and alter a man’s DNA?  It has more functions than a can of WD-40.  Christopher promises Wilkus that he can cure him if they can get to the spaceship, unfortunately, it has taken him 20 years to collect the liquid and without it there’s nothing he can do.  Wilkus and Christopher then decide to break into the facility where the oil is being kept and this is where becomes a mind numbing, testosterone laced, action flick.  The last hour of the film seems to last for 4 hours and all the originality of the film is drained away.  It becomes no different than or .

The acting is first rate, especially Sharlto Copley and the effects are very good.  If anything, shows the promise of a brilliant filmmaker in Neill Blomkamp.  If he were able to sustain the intelligence of the first half of the film throughout the whole movie, instead of turning the film into a cliché sci-fi action film, would’ve been one of the best sci-fi films of all time.  I would be more forgiving of the film if they had at least cut down the length of the action scenes.  could’ve been a half hour shorter and been a way better film.  It is true that sometimes less is more.

To sum it up, is an original, intelligent, well thought out story that serves as a mirror to the social injustice and racism that runs rampant through our “human” society that dissolves into a overly violent, overly long, standard sci-fi action flick.  The first half makes it a film worth watching, but the second half will leave you with a headache.  Knowing what I know now about how the movie changes course, I can only hope that I will enjoy more a second time around.

This is the time of year when, in temperate climes, leaves riot with color, breezes take on the scent of decay, and all the cultures that celebrate All Hallows Eve prepare for the year’s first nod to the holiday season. Scary movies are a serious draw when temperatures drop and leaves start to fall—and since the only other horror film released this month has been the sixth movie in the Saw franchise (just get it over with already!), Paranormal Activity will certainly make bank at the box office this weekend. Unfortunately, it is not the kind of catharsis many look for in a horror movie, nor is it remotely as interesting as its predecessors in the home-video-horror genre. In fact, it’s downright disappointing.

When The Blair Witch Project released in 1999, half of audiences believed they were actually watching footage chronicling the last days of three student filmmakers. That film fell at precisely the correct moment in recent history for that kind of guerrilla filmmaking. Amateurish as it may have been, it preceded the communications technology with which we’re all inundated each day, each hour, each second. It seemed possible that the movie could be real because the marketing relied solely on spare, spooky trailers and an intriguingly vague website. Ten years later, Paranormal Activity tries to exploit the same shaky-cam, night-vision film—and fails.

Paranormal Activity follows a young San Diego couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) through a month in Fall 2006 in which they strive to capture the presence that’s haunting their suburban home. The premise is simple: grad student Katie has sensed a supernatural force around her since the age of eight, and boyfriend Micah, a day trader who looks and acts like a frat boy, takes the haunting personally and decides to try to capture it with a video camera. Camera phones, the social media of Twitter and Facebook, and easy access to the kind of cinematic technology that used to be found only in Hollywood and college classrooms, have seemingly compelled us all to keep the world informed of every aspect of our personal lives. So of course the film industry wants to capitalize on the overshare.

The film falls short by arranging a regrettably thin layer of spooky occurrences beneath a thicker deposit of badly acted exposition and obnoxious characters. The couple and all secondary characters are total unknowns, which fits with the idea that audiences are privy to the lives of everyday citizens. The problem lies in the movie’s inability to create believable tension. The night-vision camera, which Micah sets up in their bedroom, captures one paranormal happening after another, but the tension isn’t enough to keep the plot moving. In Blair Witch, the characters began to use their cameras as buffers between themselves and the horror confronting them nightly; in that film the behavior makes perfect sense. You try to escape what you can’t believe or categorize. Paranormal Activity’s Micah, however, is simply the ultimate narcissist. He says multiple times that no one messes with his girlfriend and his house and gets away with it. He treats the subject with an appropriate amount of disdain and disbelief, borrowing a Ouija board and regarding the psychic Katie calls with utter contempt. As things progress he gradually becomes a believer while Katie descends into mentally unstable territory.

The movie touches briefly on theology—according to the resident psychic, the malevolent force responsible for slamming doors and amphibian nighttime footprints is no ghost, but an angry demon. The film only provides the audience with a fleeting nod to evil forces whose mythology should be utterly terrifying. Micah finds an article online telling the story of a “woman from the 60s” whose haunting bears a striking resemblance to Katie’s, but not enough information is conveyed to create adequate apprehension. There are a few genuinely spooky moments and one particularly jarring instant (which for some reason the filmmakers included in the trailer). But ultimately the film never lives up to the kind of tension it’s supposed to create, and the end is a cringing nod to every other movie in this subgenre.

The marketing campaign for this film is pure genius; the internet has been abuzz with reviews touting it as the scariest movie of the year. Frankly (and luckily for the filmmakers), 2009 has been a meager year in the realm of horror. The filmmakers strove to capitalize on the phenomenon created by The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield. Unfortunately, although the dollars will undoubtedly roll in for all involved, this movie fails to live up to its more worthy predecessors. For a good home-movie scare this Halloween, rent the utterly terrifying [REC] or its American remake, Quarantine. Watch Blair Witch again (at the very least, its foreboding Maryland woods set the scene for autumn). Although Paranormal Activity may tweak some viewers’ nerves, don’t go into it hoping for the most terrifying movie you’ve ever seen, lest you leave feeling duped..

This video documents more real haunting activity that is happening in my house. The little ghost girl is focusing her attention on scaring me. I heard knocks and other weird noises before I started to record. The ghost appeared and I could only see her in the LCD screen of the video camera. The paranormal ghostly activity continues and I will record more as the events occur.

Lewis so special come through loud and clear in this version of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the character of Aslan has been faithfully brought to the screen.  The humanity of Aslan, and the depth of his sacrifice, is all the more amazing when you consider that this wondrous lion is a product of computer animation.

Since the Narnia books first made their appearance, many have seen them as a Christian allegory, and there is no doubt that Mr. Lewis intended Aslan as a Jesus figure.  In fact, C.S. Lewis long resisted an animated version of the books, feeling that a cartoon approach would be akin to blasphemy.

Movie review: ‘Elf’ (2003)

A great Christmas movie can pass a simple test.

Does it make you feel like you’re six again, listening for any sound of Ol’ St. Nick’s sleigh on Christmas Eve?

Will Ferrell’s “Elf” does just that.

The film falls comfortably between children’s entertainment and a subversive adult romp, all thanks to Ferrell’s manic turn as Buddy the Elf.

It’s far from perfect, but even “A Christmas Story” isn’t immune from some fast-forward moments.

“Elf” must have been a slam-dunk pitch. We’ll get Ferrell to play an overgrown elf lumbering around Santa’s workshop. But the film’s visual gags, all razor sharp thanks to director Jon Favreau’s keen eye, only hint at the fun to follow.

It’s when Buddy walks – yes, walks – to Manhattan that “Elf” finds its big, beating heart. It’s classic fish out of water fare, but the awkward exchanges start adding up to something truly special.

All Buddy wants to do is reunite with his biological pappy (James Caan), but along the way he redecorates Gimbels, gets into a wicked snowball fight and even flirts with a bedraggled department store drone (the radiant Zooey Deschanel).

If for nothing else, her duet with Ferrell while she’s in the shower would let “Elf” stand out in any holiday season.

The sturdy support team includes a droll Bob Newhart, Artie Lange as a dime-store Santa and Peter Dinklage in a fiercely funny cameo as an author who gets cut down to size by Buddy’s line of questioning.

“Elf” loses some of its oomph in the final scenes set in Central Park, as Santa (Ed Asner) tries to escape a marauding band of horses.

DIdn’t this concept fall flat in the table readings?

But the film has already stockpiled enough Christmas cheer to forgive such clunky finishes.

Ferrell has been wallowing in his man-child shtick for years now. But he’s never delivered his routine with such profound innocence as he does in “Elf.”
